Honda’s snowy teaser image for the redesigned 2023 HR-V could easily be mistaken for an illustration on a holiday card, but it’s our first look at the redesigned small SUV that will go on sale in the US later this year.

Honda has given its first look at the HR-V 2023 for the US market. The sketch shows the basic design of the subcompact crossover but doesn’t reveal much. Honda said the new model will go on sale later this year.

The new HR-V 2023 will replace the aging current-generation model that has been around since 2014. It doesn’t appear to share the body with the European-market HR-V hybrid that was revealed last year, suggesting that the US model will be bigger.

It could be based on the Civic platform, which would be a departure from the current model’s Fit-based foundation.

We suspect that the HR-V’s powertrain will also mirror the latest Civic, with a choice of 2.0-liter 2.0-liter and 180-hp turbo 1.5-liter inline-four engines.

A hybrid could join the lineup, too. Either front-wheel or all-wheel drive will be available, along with an automatic CVT. Any of these combinations would be a welcome upgrade over the HR-V’s low-powered 1.8-liter inline-four engine with just 141 horsepower.

To counter the onslaught of a desirable and stylish small SUV, Honda prepared a 2023 HR-V with a handsome redesign, and from the teaser images, we can see that it will look different from the version sold in Europe.

The previous generation was practical and offered good value, but the revamped model needed more curb traction and a more attractive powertrain to challenge the best in its segments, such as the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30.

A four-cylinder will remain the HR-V’s powertrain of choice, but we’re not sure if it will be the turbocharged or naturally aspirated type.

To maintain the model’s unbeatable versatility, we expected the second-row Magic Chair to create a repeating look; a modernized cabin with the latest technology is also expected to be part of the redesign.

Honda’s smallest crossover will be completely redesigned for the 2023 model year and is expected to debut in the spring.

Honda this week showed an artist rendering of the Honda HR-V subcompact crossover. The 2023 HR-V will continue to be Honda’s smallest vehicle and offer “enhanced versatility, style and performance; The new HR-V will have a greater role as an aspirational vehicle and gateway to the Honda brand,” said a Honda executive.

The HR-V will launch in the first half of 2022, as the 2023 model, followed by new versions of every Honda SUV except the Honda Passport. This year there will also be a new Honda Accord.

At Tuesday’s briefing, Honda also outlined its plans for electrification. It calls for the adoption of hybrid models soon, the introduction of EVs, and an upgrade to 100% electric by 2040. Some automakers say they will be fully electric by 2035 or sooner.

Based on a pair of renderings released by Honda, the car looks slimmer and more aerodynamic than the second-generation, 2016-2022, Honda Fit, which measures 170 inches long and has an EPA0 rating of 30 mph overall.

The HR-V 2023 will likely continue with Honda Magic folding seats. In addition, the flat-folding configuration allows for one large cargo space and seating for two, the bottom of the second-row seats fold down, like a cinema seat, allowing for carrying tall items such as bicycles or plants in an upright manner.

The HR-V is also expected to get newer technology including driver assistance. The HR-V currently has adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, but only on the top two trim lines.

There’s no blind-spot warning, instead, the 2022 Fit offers the Honda LaneWatch, a rear-facing camera that displays a passenger-only rear view in the center stack view, and the driver measures location based on three lines indicating safe, careful, or not-changing lanes.

Honda notes that even in the last year of the HR-V’s current life, it was the leading seller in the subcompact SUV class with 137,090 sales, according to Market Intelligence, followed by the Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Kicks, and Kia. Soul.

All artist renderings show the car is slimmer and inferior to what’s being sold, so it’s unclear how much of a visual change there will be in 2023.

Also TBD: Will the new HR-V use the core design of the 2022 Honda Civic, Forbes Wheel Sedan of the Year for 2022, which is about 10 inches long? And will the Civic use a 158-horsepower and 180-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine? The outgoing HR-V limps at 141 horsepower and is built on the chassis of the now-defunct Honda Fit hatchback.

Honda has released a holiday card-style winter stretch of the redesigned 2023 HR-V. Compared to the HR-V 2022, the front of the HR-V 2023 is more aggressive and has a more distinctive lower fascia.

The 2023 HR-V’s grille features an S-shaped mesh pattern. Additionally, the hood is lower, and the headlights have a more square shape.

For the rear of the HR-V 2023, the redesigned crossover slides down a steeper slope compared to the 2022 model.

2023 Honda HRV Specs

One of the downsides of the 2022 HR-V is that its 141-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine isn’t very powerful. To compete with its subcompact SUV competitors, the 2023 HR-V may offer a more powerful engine option, as Car and Driver explains.

This could come in the form of a Honda Civic’s 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 180-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

The next-generation European-spec Honda HR-V will be powered by the same hybrid powertrain found in the Honda Accord and Honda Insight. However, Honda hasn’t said whether to offer a hybrid version of the HR-V in the US or not

The gas-powered Honda Vezel G uses the newly developed 1.5-liter four-cylinder ‘L15Z’ engine that produces 87 kW (117 hp) and 142 Nm (105 Lb.-Ft.). The engine is mated to a CVT as standard, and it is the same unit used on the fourth-generation Honda Fit but with a lower gear ratio.

The 2022 Honda Vezel Hybrid X/Z/Play features an e: HEV hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter ‘LEC’ i-VTEC petrol engine and two electric motors. The engine produces 78 kW (105 hp) and 127 Nm (94 Lb.-Ft.), while the drive motor, internally referred to as the ‘H5,’ produces 96 kW (129 hp) and 253 Nm (187 Lb.-Ft.).

In Europe, Honda is selling the HR-V 2022 exclusively with the e: HEV hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine with two electric motors – a traction motor and a generator. The engine produces 79 kW (106 hp) and 131 Nm (97 Lb.-Ft.), and the traction motor produces 96 kW (129 hp) and 253 Nm (187 Lb.-Ft.) of torque.

Honda says it has moved the HR-V hybrid power control unit from under the trunk (on the previous-gen) to the engine compartment and increased the number of Lithium-ion battery cells from 48 to 60. Sport, Normal, Econ, and B (more powerful regeneration) are available drive modes.

The all-new model is electric from the start, and when the engine is under high torque demand, it switches to hybrid power. At “higher and more constant speeds”, the gasoline engine is in charge of propulsion.

Honda’s new subcompact SUV sketch made us want to see more. We were thrilled when Honda introduced the new Euro-market HR-V (known in some parts globally as the Vezel), but Honda quickly told us to calm down—it’s not a subcompact HR-V.

We’re looking for. The US, Honda told us, will accept the new HR-V in its way. Not to insinuate our friends at Honda, but whenever a car manufacturer tells us something like this—one of them thinks, not just Honda—we have to wonder if we’re not procrastinating.

Today, Honda released a sketch of the North American market for the 2023 HR-V (actually, they look like paintings, which is relatively cool). And no, we’re not procrastinating—it’s a different ride. Look at the back door, and what do you see? Door handle on the body.

The new Euro-HR-V/Vezel has rear door handles hidden in the door pillars, much like the current HR-V (and will be released soon). From what the painter shows, North America won the HR-V lottery, because if the original looked like that, it would be a much cuter creature than the HR-V returning to Europe. We love the big black grille—a bit like the Kia since former Audi designer Peter Schreyer tries to make all his Kias look like Audi.

It certainly looks better than the chrome confusion of the larger CR-V. (Honda has a new CR-V coming for 2023, and we hope it looks good.) Speaking of Audi (the old one, right?), the HR-V’s rounded rear bears some resemblance to that. according to the Audi Q3.

We hope the majestic exterior style is an indicator of what we will see inside. We prefer the HR-V, and we always thought a more glamorous version would suit buyers.

And what lurks behind that handsome skin? Honda’s two-sentence statement that accompanies the sketch isn’t much help. As a rule, we don’t copy and paste press releases, but we will make an exception, given the rarity of other news here: “Honda kicks off the Crossover Year by taking a peek at the all-new sporty and versatile model. 2023 HR-V.

The new HRV will launch in America North this year.” Okay, so that’s not forming information. If we had to guess — which, of course, we understand — we would predict that one of the new HR-V’s powertrains would be a 212-hp hybrid powertrain according to the Euro-market HR-V, based on a roughly 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine.

We’re assuming there will be a non-hybrid version, and while we’re complaining about the HR-V’s current muted acceleration, it wouldn’t surprise us if the 1.8-liter engine was replaced with something a little bolder, perhaps a 2.0 engine. -the naturally-aspirated liter engine according to the entry-level Civic and (if we’re lucky) the 1.5-liter turbo Honda, also found on the spectacular new Civic.

The fact that the sketch shows the HR-V darting through the snow using a skateboard strapped to a roof rack suggests an all-wheel-drive option. That might seem like a no-brainer for an SUV, but don’t forget that some of the entry-level sport-utes (Toyota CH-R & Nissan Kicks, to explain 2) don’t show AWD; Today’s HR-V does show AWD.

Whatever the look of the last HR-V & whatever the configuration, this teaser has done its job: We’re excited to see for example what the real thing is.
